London commuters faced massive crowds and delays on the Jubilee line on Thursday after a train broke down just before rush hour.

Tube staff shut some of the gates leading into Canary Wharf station in a bid to stop overcrowding as large crowds built up at the station.

Some passengers reported waiting for an eastbound train for nearly half an hour with the delays being called “unacceptable”.

Tube user Steve Ackroyd complained of a “massive crowd on the plaza” while Magdalena Pitcher said her journey from Canary Wharf to Stratford took 25 minutes.

Brogan Smith told the Standard: “They had two barriers open to get into the station to prevent congestion then they let everyone in at once.”

She added: “It was chaos.”

Ms Pitcher said on Twitter: “It’s very frustrating when you miss your train because of bad public transport and are late to pick up your child from nursery.”

Sarah Taylor said it also took her 25 minutes “to do a 10 minute journey”.

A spokesperson for the Jubilee Line apologised and said on Twitter the slow service was caused by an earlier faulty train.

They said: “Some gates are closed, this is to reduce the flow onto the platform and prevent overcrowding while the line has delays”.
