Transport bosses today unveiled ambitious new plans to transform one of north London’s busiest Tube stations.
Camden Town Underground station could be given an entirely new entrance as Transport for London tries to solve overcrowding problems.
There could also be three new escalators and step-free access from the platforms to street level under proposals put forward for public consultation by TfL.
It comes as the body warned of a 60 per cent rise in the number of people using the station every day in the next decade.
More than 80,000 people currently use the station daily, TfL said. It is regularly forced to close due to overcrowding during peak times at weekends as tourists flock to nearby Camden market.
Launching the consultation, TfL pledged to work with Camden Council on the proposals, and preserve the area’s “unique character” by not making changes to nearby buildings.
London Underground's Director for Strategy Gareth Powell said: “Camden Town is already one of our busiest interchange stations, and customer numbers are set to rise rapidly as London's population grows.
“Our plans to modernise and expand the station would mean a third entrance, step-free access, and much better journeys for customers. We're keen to hear as many views on our plans as possible, so that we deliver the improvements that people want to see.”
The new entrance to the Tube station would be between Kentish Town Road and Camden High Street, in Buck Street.
Work on the station could begin in 2019, with a target completion date of 2023/24, according to TfL.
