Twitter is implementing new rules which will aim to cut down on hateful and abusive comments.

The social media site has announced that it is enforcing updated policies to target death threats and accounts that glorify violence.

The new standards are explained in a blog post detailing the policy changes.

“Specific threats of violence or wishing for serious physical harm, death, or disease to an individual or group of people is in violation of our policies,” the company writes.

“Today, we are starting to enforce these policies across Twitter. In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process.

“We’ll evaluate and iterate on these changes in the coming days and weeks, and will keep you posted on progress along the way.

“We’re making these changes to create a safer environment for everyone.”

Twitter will now take into account potentially offensive language used in account profiles as well as individual tweets, while hateful imagery will be hidden away with a “sensitive media” prompt.

One Twitter account which has already been suspended under the new rules belongs to Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of Britain First, whose anti-Muslim posts were recently shared by Donald Trump.

The suspension means that Fransen’s account is deleted, and her former tweets are no longer accessible.
