The businessman name-checked by David Cameron at the Conservative party conference was named 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Alastair Lukies founded Monitise in 2003, two years before Mr Cameron seized the Tory leadership, but has gone on to fly with the Prime Minister on trade missions across the globe.

Like many entrepreneurs, Mr Lukies, whose company headquarters are in Throgmorton Street, Angel, spotted a business opportunity and decided to exploit it.

Mr Cameron told activists in Birmingham: "He and his business partner saw a world with almost six billion mobile phones and just two billion bank accounts. They saw the huge gap in the market and they started a mobile banking firm helping people in the poorest parts of the world manage their money and start new companies.

"He's been with me on trade missions all over the world - and his business is booming."

In his keynote speech to grassroots members, Mr Cameron said Monitise boosted its workforce seven-fold in the two-and-a-half years since the Tories came to power in coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

"Back in 2010, when we came to office, they employed about 100 people. Now it's more than 700," said the Prime Minister.

"Then they were nowhere in Africa, nowhere in Asia. Now they are the global player with one million new users every month.

"So don't let anyone tell you Britain can't make it in this world - we're the most enterprising, buccaneering, creative, dynamic nation on earth."

According to Monitise's website, Mr Lukies "has a proven track record of turning visions and concepts into real businesses".

In 2006 the company was recognised as a "technology pioneer" by the World Economic Forum and in June 2007 the firm listed on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market.

The website continues: "He was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2011 Growing Business Awards.

"Prior to conceiving, financing and successfully building Monitise, Alastair was a co-founder of epolitix.com, the portal for Westminster, Whitehall and the devolved institutions."

The website says Monitise provides services to more than 300 financial institutions and has more than 15 million users worldwide.
