Lord Mandelson claimed that his controversial memoirs would help the Labour leadership battle today as he hinted he may donate some of his profits to the party.

As the backlash intensified over his revelations of Blair-Brown feuding, he said he would "want" to give Labour some of the estimated £400,000 fee from the serialisation of his book.

Contrary to reports, the former business secretary insisted that Tony Blair was not "livid" with his memoir, The Third Man.

He even read out on ITV's This Morning a Blackberry message from Mr Blair which read: "I specifically said to all who asked that I am not angry."

But other Labour figures were furious at the way the book has resurrected stories about the dysfunctional relationship between Mr Blair and Gordon Brown.

Lord Kinnock was said to be "spitting" while Lord Prescott was "furious". Former spin chief Alastair Campbell criticised Lord Mandelson for giving a "one-sided, negative portrayal" of Mr Brown.

Labour leadership contenders David and Ed Miliband have attacked the memoirs for portraying a "psychodrama" that prevents Labour from looking to the future.

Asked on BBC Radio's Today programme if he thought it was helpful to the party to publish his book now, Lord Mandelson said: "Yes, I do. I think you have to write these things when they are fresh in your mind and they are relevant."

Asked whether he would donate the book's profits to Labour, he replied: "That's what I want to do, looking forward to find a way in which I can help the Labour Party."
