Conservative Michael Fabricant has hit back at claims he wears a wig after two MPs appeared to mock him during a live broadcast of Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.

Mr Fabricant, famous for his golden hair, seemed to be ridiculed behind his back in the Commons by two Tory colleagues, business minister Kelly Tolhurst and Bexhill and Battle MP Huw Merriman.

As Mr Fabricant asked Theresa May a question during PMQs, the pair were caught on camera whispering to each other before Mr Merriman pointed at Mr Fabricant’s hairline.

Mr Merriman then appeared to mouth the words “it’s a wig” and “definitely a wig” to people on the other side of the Commons with a smile on his face as he sat on the bench behind Mr Fabricant.

People on social media were quick to highlight the gaffe, with one asking who the MP pointing is.

In response, Mr Fabricant hit back and wrote: “It’s Huw Merriman MP. I realise no one knows him. A newish member, a little short-sighted, and who doesn’t yet realise that MPs are televised, bless.

“I know people are annoyed about his antics, they have been calling my office, but he’ll eventually learn how to behave. Sweet.”

Some people have since called for Mr Merriman to apologise, with one person writing: “He needs to learn some respect.”

“The guy in the Commons mouthing 'it’s a wig' while Michael Fabricant addresses the PM could have been a little more subtle,” another wrote.

Another said: “The two Tory MPs visible behind Michael Fabricant particularly enjoyed his question at #PMQs today.”

Others branded the apparent mocking “appalling childish behaviour” and “foolish”, while some praised Mr Fabricant for being a “good sport” and responding like a “true gent”.

During a recent appearance on Celebrity First Dates, the Tory MP was accused of wearing a wig. To which he replied: “It’s me, my hair is me, and if you like it great if you don’t hard luck.”
