Every school in Britain has been asked to be alert for cases of female genital mutilation in a new effort to stamp out the practice.

Education Secretary Michael Gove wrote to 35,000 head teachers requesting vigilance for girls at risk or for those who were already victims.

The move takes Britain a step closer to the approach in France, where teachers are trained to report FGM cases and where there have been 29 trials and 100 convictions in the past three decades.

Guidance by Mr Gove states that staff members working with children should report concerns of FGM practice.

To date, there have been no convictions for FGM in Britain.
