The Liberal Democrats will be targeting “blue wall” seats in London and the commuter belt following their shock victory in the North Shropshire by-election, the party has said.

There are 16 Tory seats in and around the capital which the Lib Dems claim can be won with swings far smaller than the 34 per cent it managed in last week’s by-election.

They include Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab’s Esher and Walton seat and minister for equalities Mike Freer’s Finchley and Golders Green constituency.

Mr Raab holds a majority of fewer than 3,000 votes, a number far lower than the almost 23,000 majority Helen Morgan overturned last Thursday.

Carshalton and Wallington, Wimbledon and the Cities of London and Westminster are in the sights of Lib Dem leader - Kingston and Surbiton MP - Ed Davey and candidates to fight the next election have already been announced.

Mr Davey said: “We saw in North Shropshire that people are fed up with being ignored and taken for granted by an out of touch Conservative party.

“There will be Conservative MPs across London and the home counties who will be looking over their shoulders very nervously at their Liberal Democrat rivals.

"My party is already on an election footing in the capital in those seats where it is clearly a two horse race between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats."
