The Conservatives and Labour will face “a torrent of pent-up frustration” from voters if Britain is forced to hold Euro-elections, Liam Fox warned today.

“I’m not sure that there are many people in the House of Commons who would fancy that particular meeting with voters,” the International Trade Secretary told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

His warning was aimed at trying to persuade MPs to back Theresa May’s deal so that Britain leaves the EU before elections in May.

If they reject it and the parties take part in the elections, he said they would risk losing votes to The Independent Group and Nigel Farage’s planned Brexit Party.

“It would unleash a torrent of pent-up frustration from voters and I think that the major parties will do what they can to avoid having to fight those European elections,” he said.
