Hopes of seeing Ed Balls strutting his latest Strictly moves at Labour’s “Diversity Nite” have been dashed.

The star event, hosted in previous years by senior Labour MP Keith Vaz, was due to take place at the East East restaurant and bar near the conference centre in Liverpool.

But a source said the party, which previously attracted many of Labour’s most senior MPs, had been cancelled in recent days.

Mr Vaz, 59, quit earlier this month as chairman of the Commons home affairs committee after allegations that he had sex at his London flat with male prostitutes.

The committee is carrying out an investigation into prostitution and the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has started an inquiry into the Leicester East MP’s conduct.

Mr Vaz is understood to be planning a Diversity Nite in London as a victory party for Jeremy Corbyn.

Last night Yvette Cooper and Diane Abbott were among the attendees at a New Statesman drinks reception.
