London families who fear being made homeless by housing benefit cuts were promised help today.

Four schemes offering advice and practical help to people whose rent money is being slashed are getting government funding.

They will give money advice and help tenants negotiate lower rents or find an affordable new home.

Welfare reform minister Lord Freud said: "We want families on benefits to make the same choices as working families about where they live - but there's no reason for anyone to be made homeless because of these measures."

Among the schemes being funded are the North London Housing Partnership, based in Haringey and Islington; a new social lettings agency, working in eight east London boroughs, plus voluntary groups in Lambeth and Brent.
