Drones should be banned from entering airspace near airports, a former Metropolitan police commissioner has told the House of Lords.

Lord Stevens of Kirkwhelpington said all drones should be banned from flying near airports to eliminate the possibility of a collision with commercial aircraft, according to ITV News.

The independent crossbencher told the House of Lords: “Surely a quick answer is to prohibit any drones in that area.”

His comments came during a debate on drone regulation in the second chamber.

The government is currently consulting on drone regulation after 70 incidents involving drones were reported last year.

According to the broadcaster, independent crossbencher Lord Hylton agreed with Lord Stevens, saying the government should introduce “total exclusion zones” for drones around flight paths.

While Conservative peer Lord Naseby said the threat of terrorism warranted more stringent laws on drone use.

Transport minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbeldon said the government had already made progress and is looking at issues of geofencing as well as different systems for detecting the aircraft.
