David Cameron’s visit to Essex to launch a new work scheme backfired today when he confused which borough he was in.

The Prime Minister was delivering a hard-hitting message to the local council regarding spending cuts.

When pressed by BBC Essex he was keen to point out Chelmsford Borough Council was spending more now than in 2008 when the financial crash happened.

The problem was he was actually in neighbouring Colchester, and not Chelmsford.

He said: “Chelmsford has not been unfairly targeted.”

“I'd encourage Chelmsford Borough Council," he went on, before suddenly realising his mistake and hastily correcting himself, "sorry, Colchester Borough Council, to do what other councils have done - to share services, share facilities.

"That's what other councils are doing - Chelmsford included - and I'm sure Colchester will have a look at that."

Mr Cameron was launching the Help to Work scheme at the Job Centre in Colchester High Street.

The new scheme requires unemployed people to visit the Job Centre every day.

The gaffe comes a day after Mr Cameron made the mistake of pledging to make ‘children illegal’ instead of child abuse training manuals.

His tweet said: “It's unacceptable there's a loophole allowing paedophile "training manuals", that's why I want to protect children by making them illegal.”
