Ukip leadership hopeful Suzanne Evans has called for the sacking of the High Court judges who ruled that Theresa May cannot trigger Article 50.

The "activist judges", as described by Ms Evans, ruled that Theresa May cannot trigger Article 50 and so begin Brexit without the backing of Parliament.

And Ms Evans has argued their decision has undermined democracy and overturns the "will" of voters.

"How dare these activist judges attempt to overturn our will? It's a power grab and undermines democracy," she wrote on Twitter. "Time we had the right to sack them.

"Article 50 is an EU trap we must not fall into. It will tie us into the EU for years. The Government must appeal. People power must win."

She added: "Predictably, the same people now quoting 'parliamentary sovereignty' are the very same people who were happy to give it away for last 40yrs."

The Ukip leadership contender also suggested that MPs who fail to stick up for their constituents who voted to leave risk losing their seats to Ukip candidates.

She wrote: "Most MPs had constituents who voted Leave. If they don't stand up for them now, UKIP will take their votes for good.

"And if it comes down to Peers v People the House of Lords will not survive for long."

Interim leader Nigel Farage has warned that the decision could lead to a “betrayal” of the 51.9 per cent of people who voted to leave the EU.

He wrote on Twitter: "Last night at the Spectator Parliamentary Awards I had a distinct feeling that our political class, who were out in force, do not accept the 23rd of June referendum result.

"I now fear that every attempt will be made to block or delay the triggering of Article 50.

"If this is so, they have no idea of the level of public anger they will provoke."
