Mayor wins £2.3m funding to help victims of crime

Extra funds are to be ploughed into support for crime victims in London.

A new report has highlighted failures to help victims of emerging crimes such as trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The deputy mayor for policing and crime, Stephen Greenhalgh, said London has won an extra £2.36 million to fund improvements in services supporting victims of crime in the capital.

The report, commissioned by the Mayor’s office for policing and crime (Mopac), makes 13 recommendations for improvements.

The study says future funding should address key gaps in support for children and young people, victims of hate crime and people who are trafficked and exploited.

There are more people suffering from trafficking and sexual exploitation and an increase in the number of men and young people suffering from relationship abuse, the study says.

The extra funds from the Ministry of Justice will mean Mopac will have £6.7 million to spend on victims’ services when it takes over responsibility for the role in October. Mr Greenhalgh said: “There are still too many victims of crime and the experience for victims and their families can be devastating.

“The report has highlighted some key gaps that I want to fill and we are delighted that our case has been heard and we now have the extra funding to do that.”
