Wedding bells for a Girl with Pearls

Journalist Simon Jenkins and his partner Hannah Kaye, events producer at Intelligence Squared, are tying the knot in November and Jenkins has come up with a unique engagement present.

Jenkins started his career at Country Life, where he edited the frontispiece which, by featuring young debutantes, became known as Girls in Pearls. In a celebration of the betrothal, he has secured the slot for Kaye, pearls and all.

It’s the fulfilment of a prophecy. “I was more Left-wing in those [Country Life] days,” he recalls. “A colleague joked that I’d end up marrying one of the girls on the page. It seemed inconceivable. But this is a well-meant joke at my expense.”
