Time out - while the mag goes up in smoke

Many of Britain’s top artists, including Antony Gormley, Mark Wallinger, Grayson Perry and Rachel Whiteread, turned up last night at Tate Britain for the opening of two exhibitions by Gary Hume and Patrick Caulfield. Most guests had just flown back over the weekend from the Venice Biennale. “Lousy, rainy weather in Venice,” moaned Alan Yentob — a sentiment echoed by Tate director Nicholas Serota.

Another guest, Time Out founder Tony Elliott, had just heard that a fire had destroyed two-thirds of this week’s magazine. It means reprinting most copies to appear on Thursday rather than the usual publication date, today. He could have done with some of that Venetian rain to quench the fire. And the cover strapline of this week’s issue? “London’s hot food trends ...The young chefs set to make this city sizzle.”
