Culture Minister Ed Vaizey stood in for unwell Culture Secretary Maria Miller at an Advertising Association reception on the House of Commons terrace last night. Vaizey was accompanied by Miller’s special adviser, Nick King, who had been acting as Vaizey’s minder all day.

“He’s never worked so hard,” said Vaizey, pausing a beat, “to keep me on message and avoid any foul-ups.” With the clock at 7.45pm, he said he was hopeful that he could get through the day without a gaffe.

Vaizey gets on well with the ad-land luminaries. Facebook Europe boss Nicola Mendelsohn, married to ennobled Labour peer and fundraiser Jon Mendelsohn, introduced Vaizey to the crowd by describing him as “my minister”. “And you’re my Lady,” he responded.
