Saturday comes to Wiltons

Regulars at Wiltons, the St James’s restaurant that has been open since before the United States had a constitution, are relieved that it is back in business after a refurbishment. But there has been a revolution in the meantime. It is for the first time opening on a Saturday night.

Wiltons’ robust clientele of grandees — members of the Government, business persons and the British aristocracy — have returned with some bafflement about how many oysters will be scoffed and bottles of champagne will flow on a non-school night. “I’m in the country come Saturday,” chuffs one.

“Are the young St James’s hedge-funders now in their offices all weekend?”
