Paxo’s Twitter account is real after all

9 October 2013

Another Ian Katz Twitter gaffe? Last night the Newsnight editor tweeted to a Jeremy Paxman account “@iankatz1000: Also tonight: @JeremyPaxman grills Tommy Robinson on his decision to quit the English Defence League plus ...”

@JeremyPaxman has 723 followers and contains just seven tweets posted since January 2012 such as “Just contemplating a cup of tea. Rich Tea or digestive? I simply can’t decide ”, “Just occurred to me. Where would we be without bath plugs?”, “Grey skies. I think I might take an umbrella with me when I go out” and “Had a bath this morning”.

It is more fun and thought-provoking than the boring snoring EDL, and last night tweeters thought Katz had made another blunder by directing Newsnight watchers to a spoof account. Katz got in hot water only last month after he tweeted that Labour MP Rachel Reeves was “boring snoring”. He made the gaffe in a post on Twitter that was meant to be a private direct message but ended up visible to 26,000 followers.

But no. A BBC spokesman confirms today to the Londoner that the whimsical account really does belong to the fearless Newsnight presenter. “Some of them are a bit tongue-in-cheek, as you can see,” said the spokesman. “But yes, those are all his own work.” It was originally a spoof account but has since been reclaimed by Paxman and all tweets to date are his own. It’s clearly inconceivable to Katz that Paxo wouldn’t get down with the Newsnight kids and tweet all hours. Get with the programme, Jeremy. Keep tweeting.
