Magnanimous toast to Lucy Hughes-Hallett

Vanity Fair’s British editor Henry Porter hosted a lively party at his Cleveland Square flat for the launch of Nicholas Shakespeare’s new book Priscilla: The Hidden Life of an Englishwoman in Wartime France.

Among the guests were Vogue editor Alex Shulman, Helena Bonham Carter, Sebastian Faulks, Colin Thubron, Everyman publisher David Campbell and Ed Stourton. The author thanked the writers in the room and began name-checking them. “What about Lucy?” piped up someone, pointing to Lucy Hughes-Hallett. “I was coming to her,” he protested, before magnanimously raising a toast to the winner of this week’s Samuel Johnson Prize.
