Get ready for Bulldog Boris versus Clemmie Churchill

5 June 2013

What a coincidence. First Boris Johnson chooses Sir Winston Churchill as the subject of his next book. Now I hear that his unauthorised biographer, Sonia Purnell, is to write a biography of Sir Winston’s wife, Clemmie.

Provisionally titled The First Lady of War, the book will be published in 2015, the same year as Boris’s hagiography comes out.

“Mrs Churchill lived in the shadow of her husband, as wives often did in those days, and she was a very private person, but she was much more influential and more involved in his work than most women of that era,” says Purnell.

“There are a huge number of letters and it’s quite clear that he couldn’t have achieved anything without her. She lived for another 10 years after Churchill died in 1965 and there are still a lot of people alive who knew her and worked with her.

“Boris has always been obsessed with WSC and has even carefully adopted his bulldog-like posture. All part of the Johnsonian great plan. But while he shares Churchill’s self-belief and elitist populism, he has nothing at all to compare in terms of achievement.”
