Hot Scots are in. The new edition of Spectator Life is on a series of top young actors north of the border, but will such flattery help or hinder the cause of Scottish independence? Rose Leslie, who plays Ygritte in Games of Thrones, would prefer the Union.

“I have a real concern about independence and actually, frankly, if we are going to be dictated to by anyone, I would prefer it to be Westminster rather than Brussels,” she tells the magazine.

Young Glaswegian James McArdle, about to star as James I (James VI to the Scottish) in a joint National Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland production, meanwhile wouldn’t have landed the part if he’s listened to his training.

“My speech teacher at Rada said, ‘James, must you go home for Christmas?’ he recalls. “When I said yes she said, ‘Then do listen to Radio 4’.”
