That snazzy neckwear worn yesterday by former Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell, when defending himself against the Plebgate rumpus, was the tie of the Royal Tank Regiment.

It was intended to send out a message. As a friend of the ex-Army officer, “Mitch”, puts it: “Andrew has developed an outer layer of steel and he is coming out on the attack, all guns blazing.” Tory MP David Davis was wearing his SAS tie as well.

If Mitchell’s police opponents want to beat him, they may need to invest in a bazooka.
