Detectives investigating a "disturbing" incident in which a man held a woman against her will in a train toilet are appealing for the Good Samaritan who freed her to come forward.

Police said a man barged in on the woman in the cubicle, made "indecent remarks" and grabbed her arm when she tried to escape as she travelled overnight on the 3.50am Brighton to London Victoria train.

But another man intervened and freed the victim by opening the toilet door as the train approached Haywards Heath station.

Police have arrested a 33-year-old man from London on suspicion of false imprisonment after the incident on November 29. He was bailed him until January 26.

Police would like to speak to the man who freed the woman as part of their investigation.

Detective Constable Vanessa Cottington said: “Another man opened the door during the incident.

“We need him to come forward so we can establish exactly what happened."
