Wife of injured choirmaster tells hit-run driver: Hand yourself in

The wife of a TV choirmaster has called on the hit-and-run driver who seriously injured her husband to give himself up to police.

Nick Bowers-Broadbent led gospel group Revelation to the semi-finals of BBC1’s Last Choir Standing. He was cycling through Homerton when he was hit by a silver Ford Focus. The music teacher, 43, was thrown into the air, broke his right leg in two places and suffered fractured ribs.

He underwent surgery at Homerton Hospital and doctors estimate it will take him up to eight weeks to recover. The car was found the following day abandoned in Overbury Street, Homerton. Talking to the Hackney Gazette, his wife Jackie, 42, called on the driver to own up, saying: “Nobody wants to receive a phone call like that at midnight. The worst things run through your mind. I would not want to go through that again.”

She said it had been extremely traumatic for her and their children, aged two, six and nine, and she had gone to “great lengths” to prevent them hearing the news at school: “My six-year-old cried and keeps asking about his dad. Nick used to take my two-year-old to nursery in a buggy attached to his bike, and my son keeps staring at it.

“I would like to think the person who has done this has a conscience. I would appeal to them to go into a police station and say they did this. I would like to think they have a family and understand what we are going through.”

Mr Bowers-Broadbent, who lives in Wanstead and teaches at St Bonaventure’s School in Forest Gate, was hit at the junction of Brooksby’s Walk and Homerton High Street at about 11.30pm on October 14. Police said the vehicle was being driven by a black man of slim build aged about 18 to 19.

Anyone with information should contact Hackney Police on 101.
