Two men arrested after Stephen Lawrence memorial plaque 'is spat on'

24 March 2014

Two men have been arrested for criminal damage after an attack on the Stephen Lawrence Memorial plaque at the spot where the teenager died in a racist murder nearly 21 years ago.

Officers were called to the spot in Well Hall Road in Eltham, South East London around 12.40am yesterday.

The memorial stone, embedded in the pavement of the street, is monitored 24 hours a day by a CCTV camera across the road.

Police believe a vase left with a floral tribute may have been kicked over and that the stone was spat on.

Both men aged 19 and 18 have been bailed by police pending further inquiries until May 29.

The memorial plaque was laid on the spot where Stephen, 18, collapsed and died against a tree as he ran away 200 yards from the bus stop where he was stabbed in April 1993.

The memorial has acted as a focal point for family and friends and supporters to lay flowers and tributes to the youngster.

It is visited regularly by Stephen's mum Doreen Lawrence.
