The sky around Tower Bridge will be lit up by fireworks as Londoners welcome in the New Year, but the landmark’s Twitter account jumped the gun with its celebrations.

The bridge’s official Twitter account appeared to schedule its New Year message a day too early after it wished its followers a happy 2016 at 12.01am on December 31.

The post, which has since been deleted, said: “Happy New Year from everyone here at Tower Bridge!”

After the mishap had been shared by other users, the page deleted the original message and said: “Oops, guess we got a little too excited there…”

But the iconic London landmark was not the only account to jump the gun 24 hours early.

Nottingham Castle, which is holding a free fireworks display tonight, posted: “Happy New Year from all the staff at Nottingham Castle!”

Papa John’s UK tweeted: “From everyone at Papa John’s have an amazing 2016! #NYE”

And Sparkling water purveyor Highland Spring sent a message to its followers on both Twitter and Facebook which read: “Break out the bubbles - it's 2016! #HappyNewYear.”
