The Standard’s Political Editor, Joe Murphy, was named Political Journalist of the Year last night at the prestigious 2013 Press Gazette British Journalism Awards, at the Stationers and Newspaper-makers’ Hall in the City.

Judges said Murphy, pictured, brought in “genuine exclusives” including David Cameron allowing gay marriages to be held in church.

He was the only reporter at the Commons chapel service for Lady Thatcher and also revealed the peerage for Stephen Lawrence’s mother Doreen.

The Standard was shortlisted for two other awards: Ladder for London for Campaign of the Year, and Jeremy Selwyn for Photojournalist of the Year.
