A teenager has been arrested after a man was stabbed to death in a trivial row over a cigarette.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested last night on suspicion of murder following the death of the 26-year-old in Lee on Sunday evening.

He remains in a south London police station for questioning.

Witnesses said the victim was stabbed on the pavement outside a row of shops in Eltham Road.

Earlier he was seen at a bus stop where he asked the two men for a cigarette.

Firefighters from a local fire station battled to save his life but he died before he could be taken to hospital.

Imran Mohammad, who works at a local newsagents, said the victim’s friend told him what had happened.

“He said they were standing together at the bus stop and he asked these two men for a cigarette. An argument then broke out and he was stabbed,” Mr Mohammad said. “His friend said he saw it all happen. He was really upset, devastated.”
