Starry cast for latest Royal Court transfer

22 May 2012

A combination of Sally Hawkins and Rafe Spall is to be the Royal Court’s next transfer in its ambitious season of new writing.

The Happy-Go-Lucky actress and TV’s Pete Versus Life comedy star appear in Constellations by Nick Payne.

It will follow the Oxbridge dining club drama Posh and the female mid-life crisis comedy Jumpy into the Duke of York’s theatre.

The 70-minute drama, which combines quantum theory with boy-meets-girl comedy, was described as “an astonishingly fine new play” and nominated for a South Bank Sky Arts Award when it premiered in the Court’s 100-seat upstairs theatre last autumn.

Spall, 29, said it would be fantastic to be able to bring “such a beautiful piece of writing” to a bigger audience as even his sister had not been able to catch the original run.

Spall, the son of the actor Timothy, is filming a new Working Title romantic comedy I Give It A Year and is about to be seen in Ridley Scott’s new film Prometheus.

But said he had always wanted to work at the Court and to take a show from there to the West End was “a thrill”, adding: “It’s the most demanding thing I’ve ever done. Even though it’s a play about quantum physics and brain cancer it was a surprising laugh.”

Posh runs until August 4 and will be followed by Jumpy. Constellations will run from November 9 to January 5.
