A curry house was forced to temporarily close after food inspectors found dead mice and faeces there.

Officials from Tower Hamlets Council took the owners of Bethnal Green’s Al Amin Tandoori Restaurant to court after the disgusting conditions were found during a routine inspection last year.

Among the discoveries were mouse droppings “throughout the kitchen”, including on chopping boards and in cooking trays.

Rodents had also “gnawed at food” and packaging, according to the council.

Owner Abdul Noor, 56, of Restons Crescent, Eltham, pleaded guilty to six charges including inadequate control of pests, contamination of equipment and contamination of food.

He was fined more than £9,000 after a hearing at Thames Magistrates’ Court on October 8.

Ayas Miah, Tower Hamlets’ cabinet member for the environment, said: “Serious breaches of food hygiene could have a devastating impact on people who trust restaurants in the borough.

We remind all food outlets of their responsibilities and will take enforcement action against retailers where it is needed.”

A Tower Hamlets Council spokeswoman could not immediately confirm how long the restaurant was closed for.
