The coloured lights which lit up Waterloo Bridge and the Golden Jubilee footbridges during London’s summer of sport are to become a permanent feature.

Plain spotlights and floodlights were replaced with colour-changing LEDs to provide an “Olympic palette of colour”.

The lights will be kept after a £423,560 grant was given to Westminster council by Mayor Boris Johnson.

The energy-efficient lights can also emit white light for the convenience of pedestrians and the colour options might be saved for special occasions such as the New Year firework display.

Ed Argar, Westminster’s cabinet member for management and transport, said: “We will continue to make Westminster’s bridges an exciting focal point for future celebrations.”
