A loved-up commuter who met his partner for the first time under the clock at Waterloo station returned to the spot to ask her to become his wife.

Waheed and Zainab met online four months ago and the couple first laid eyes on each other in the central London terminal after arranging to meet in person.

After a whirlwind romance, Waheed decided to propose so the couple could become committed to each other.

Wanting to plan something special and unique, Waheed asked South West Trains about the possibility of having an announcement placed on one of the display boards at the station.

The train operator agreed to help by scheduling a message to appear on the screen just before 2pm on Tuesday.

The message read: “Announcement... While you are looking up here Zainab, would you give Waheed your hand in marriage...”

But the challenge proved to be getting Waheed’s wife-to-be to Waterloo for the correct time.

He told the Standard: “So [I] just needed some collaboration from friends to find a reason for Zainab to be there and created a story to get there which was the easy bit.

“But she's like a lot of commuters not looking at the boards' special notices and needed a phone call to prompt to look up at [the] text that was posted, during which I sneaked up behind her with the flowers and ring.

“The board had three messages cycling every 10 seconds so it was tricky every time she looked at it, it was one of the other two but eventually it caught her eye at the right time.”

To celebrate their engagement, the happy couple later visited the Shard and the OXO Tower’s restaurant for dinner.

A South West Trains spokesman said: "We were absolutely delighted to help Waheed and Zainab's engagement at London Waterloo.

"It's fair to say it's not a regular request we receive but it was great to be able to help out and we wish them a wonderful wedding and life together."
