A south London tower block was today evacuated for the second time in as many days thanks to an anti-freeze leak from its solar panels.

Forty-five people were ushered out of Orchard Court in Bell Green, Sydenham, at about 1pm after a 999 call from a ground floor flat complaining people could smell chemicals.

Firefighters found the substance leaking from pipes linked to the panels - just hours after the same problem forced 35 people from their homes.

Contractors are now believed to be on site fixing the problem.

Station manager Mick Sayer, who was at the scene today, said crews in special breathing apparatus had "worked hard in quite arduous conditions to contain the leak" before using salvage sheets to cover the solar panels and packing the pipes to stem the flow of vapour and liquid.

Last night's episode left occupants outside for four hours. They were allowed back inside at about 9.45pm.

Lewisham Council was not immediately able to confirm who owned the building.
