Sadiq Khan: Incidents like window-smashing Pc 'don't help confidence' in the Met

Mark Chandler22 September 2016

Sadiq Khan has welcomed an investigation into footage of a police officer smashing a car windscreen, warning such incidents don't help confidence in the Met.

The Mayor of London was quizzed today about the video - which has sparked a social media storm - at the Uefa 2020 launch in City Hall.

Leon Fontana posted the footage online at the weekend, showing the officer smashing his car window with a baton before sawing through it using a knife.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation while the officer and his colleague have been put on restricted duties.

And Mr Khan told reporters today: “Clearly it’s right that the IPCC is investigating this. It’s right there’s a proper investigation.”

He went on: “I firmly believe the way to police is by consent. That means the public have the confidence in police.

“These sorts of things don’t help and it’s right and proper there’s an investigation.”

Mr Khan would not be drawn on whether he thought the officer’s action were over the top.

His comments came after a second video was published, which appeared to show the same officer handcuffing a scooter driver.

In the footage, the officer identifies himself as PC Savage, and handcuffs Kyle Adair-Whyte “for no reason”.

Police are investigating the new video.
