Royal Opera House audience ‘cheered talent show filming in La bohème’

The Royal Opera House has defended itself against criticism after a show was stopped to allow the filming of BBC talent contest Maestro.

Audiences at Saturday night’s performances of La bohème saw act two twice, with a second cast of young singers introduced to replace the principals and perform under the baton of the winner of a contest between four celebrity conductors.

Dance judge Craig Revel Horwood, comedian Josie Lawrence, mathematician Marcus de Sautoy and DJ Trevor Nelson all began the BBC2 series vying for the honour.

A spokesman for Covent Garden said the winning conductor was cheered. About 100 from the 2,200 sell-out audience chose not to watch the recording of the repeat of the act.

“Audiences were told from the start that it would be a special performance in association with the BBC and it would be extended,” he said. Five people telephoned to complain.
