Landmarks across London are set to turn pink this evening to mark the birth of a new princess to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Tower Bridge announced it would be part of the celebrations by reposting a picture taken during the 2012 Olympics of the landmark bathed in pink light.

The London Eye and the foundains in Trafalgar Square are also expected to be specially lit to celebrate the Royal birth.

But while Royal fans have welcomed the news, others have taken to social media to criticise a move they say is "stereotyping".

"Let's introduce the new baby into our world of gender stereotypes by lighting landmarks up pink," tweeted Olivia Cooper, while Matthew Bate said the baby was being "pigeonholed already".

"Disappointed by news @CityWestminster are turning landmarks pink to celebrate royal baby girl," added Richard Sharp.

"Not exactly challenging gender stereotypes."

Meanwhile, Sianushka ‏pointed out: "If the baby was born in 20s Tower Bridge would be lit up blue for a girl. Fashion changed later. Pink for girls isn't innate!"

Tower Bridge was lit up in royal blue to celebrate Prince George's birth in 2013.
