Rio Ferdinand calls for funding for youth projects in London

Speaking out: Rio Ferdinand has called for more support for youth projects across the capital

Rio Ferdinand has called for more funding for youth projects in London to inspire people to achieve their best and stay away from crime.

The former England and Manchester United footballer said he had “nothing but fond memories” of growing up on a council estate in Peckham, but added that he feared many young people now suffer from a lack of facilities.

Ferdinand, 38, a father of three, was speaking in a video made by social enterprise Livity of a visit he made to the Brixton Soup Kitchen, during which he cooked a meal.

He said: “I had some of the best times of my life in Peckham. But I think there is a big change from when I was there. The council needs to put more money into youth initiatives.”

The BT Sports presenter said youngsters in deprived areas would “always be at the bottom of the ladder” without adequate access to youth clubs and workers.

Maisie Anderson, Southwark cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure, said: “Despite huge cuts in funding and rumours circulating about sites closing, Southwark council is investing in its services for young people across the borough.

“There’s never been a better time to be a young person in Southwark, given the array of activities and opportunities on offer.”
