Laura Proto23 June 2016

Millions of Muslims across the UK will begin fasting today as they take part in Ramadan.

Marking the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, the holy month focuses on fasting, giving to charity and prayer.

According to the 2011 census, 40 per cent of all Muslims in England live in London, with the number exceeding more than 1.1 million.

Tower Hamlets has the largest Muslim population in the capital, with more than 110,000 residents following the religion.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the holy month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims taking part in Ramadan fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking and engaging in sexual activity during this period.

Those fasting are permitted to eat and drink during Iftar – the period of time between sunset and dawn where the fast is broken.

When does Ramadan start?

This year, Ramadan begins on June 6 and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on July 7. In London, Iftar begins from 9.17pm but timings change throughout the holy month and Muslims are advised to check sunrise and sunset times daily.

Do all Muslims have to take part in Ramadan?

Adult Muslims are required to take part in the fasting unless they suffer from an illness, are travelling, elderly, pregnant, breast feeding or pregnant. Children are also exempt from fasting.

Where are celebrations being held?

Throughout Ramadan, the East London Mosque offers Iftar every evening, with more than 500 people attending for the shared meal.

To celebrate the end of Ramadan, the Eid Festival takes place in Trafalgar Square on July 9.

The festival, now in its 11th year, will include a food festival, catwalk show, face-painting, story-telling and live music. The event is organised by the Mayor of London.
