A person has died after being struck by a train in south-west London.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) raced to Putney station at about 10.20am on Wednesday following reports someone had been hit by a train.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Lines have been blocked between Barnes and Clapham Junction while emergency services work at the scene.

A BTP spokesman said the force was working to identify the person, whose gender and age is not known, and inform their family.

South Western Railway said services may be delayed or cancelled, with disruption expected until at least 2.30pm.

The operator said in a statement: “Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.

"In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.”

BTP added: “This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
