Police have shut an east London road after a “growing” sinkhole opened up in the middle of the carriageway.

Officers said Woodward Road in Dagenham had been closed in both directions afer the hole emerged near a set of traffic lights.

The road has been taped off while buses have been diverted,

Barking and Dagenham police tweeted: “Please be aware, Woodward Rd is closed in both directions between Ellerton Rd and Lodge Ave due to a growing sink hole in the road.”

Some buses were earlier diverted away from Woodward Road on Monday following a burst water main.
