The cyclist who died after getting trapped beneath a 10 tonne bus in Croydon has been named as Roger William De Klerk.

The 43-year-old IT consultant and courier was the third of five cyclists to have been killed in nine days of carnage on London's roads.

Mr De Klerk, of Forest Hill in south London, was stuck underneath a 410 bus after a collision outside East Croydon station at around midday on Tuesday.

Fire fighters elevated the bus to lift it off him, but he died around an hour later after being taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

A post-mortem examination showed he died from compression of the head, neck and chest, police said.

Witnesses described hearing screams and seeing the cyclist's leg sticking out from underneath the bus after the collision.

One estimated that it took 15 minutes for him to be freed from underneath the vehicle, where his head was "underneath where passengers stand to pay".

A Met police spokesman said: "The bus stopped at the scene and the driver was not arrested.

"Enquiries continue led by detectives from the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Catford."
