Pasta overtakes the roast dinner as Britain's favourite food

Traditional: ASK Italian are holding Fettuccine Day to coincide with the new research

Traditional stereotypes of British food tastes are being challenged in the capital as new figures show a sharp decline in the humble roast dinner.

Research into food preferences released today reveals an increasing taste for pasta, with 23 per cent of Londoners rating the Italian staple as their favourite food.

A further 28 per cent of people living in the capital believe that British food will be replaced by Italian cuisine in the next 50 years.

The research, conducted by ASK, placed Italian food ahead of the British roast dinner (21 per cent), pizza (6 per cent), and fish and chips (4 per cent).

Out of the 2,000 people surveyed, 65 per cent said they consumed pasta at least once a week.
