A 52-year-old woman was last night fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a Tesco lorry while cycling in Old Street.

Police said the HGV driver, 23, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving following the crash, which happened at the left-turn in to Central Street at about 3.40pm.

The collision left the victim critically injured. Paramedics took her to an east London hospital, where Scotland Yard said her condition had been upgraded “critical but stable” and “not life-threatening”.

The lorry driver has been bailed until December while detectives from the serious collision investigation unit continue their probe.

Witnesses took to social media to share their horror.

Seven of the eight cyclist deaths on London’s roads this year have involved lorries.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We are aware of an incident and are helping police with their enquiries.”
