A motorist is fighting for her life in hospital after a car crash close to Gatwick Airport.

The 45-year-old woman was driving a Citroen Picasso when she hit a Landrover Freelander just south of Horley in roads leading up to the airport.

She was taken to St George’s Hospital by ambulance suffering from head and body injuries where she remains in a critical condition.

The two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the crash happened yesterday evening at 6.30pm, police said.

The 50-year-old woman driving the Landrover was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with facial and back injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to speak to them.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk, quoting Operation Shilton.
