A family plagued by maggots falling into their kitchen were horrified to discover the source was a decomposing body in the flat upstairs.

Mother-of-four Karen Davy was baffled when bugs began dropping from the ceiling.

Ms Davy, who shares the flat with her teacher husband Tayo, 40, and their children Naledi, 15, Caira, 11, Micah, 10 and Ayanda, nine, said the family first noticed maggots in their kitchen.

She said: “We looked through the window, and I’ve never seen anything like it.

“There were flies coming out of the window above my head, and then were was a breeze of air from inside and the smell was horrendous. I almost threw up. I called the police straight away.”

When her local council failed to take action she called the police - who broke into the flat upstairs and found a decaying body which have been laying there for a month.

Mrs Davy, 37, claimed it took Southern Housing more than a week to clean the upstairs flat in East Dulwich, south London - leaving her overrun with the maggots and flies.

A spokesman for the housing association said they had not been able to enter the premises because of the police investigation, but the pest control specialists had now addressed the issue.

Police broke into the property on September 22 and found a body the body of a 49-year-old man understood to be the registered occupant of the flat. A post-mortem was carried out and no cause of death has yet been determined.
