Police cordoned off a major south London road this afternoon following the apparent discovery of an unexploded World War Two bomb.

Bomb squad officers were called in after builders discovered what they believed to be wartime ordnance in a back garden near Wandsworth Common.

St James’s Drive was sealed off and evacuated at about 3.30pm after the suspicious item was discovered, police said.

Pictures emerged on Twitter of a cordon in place and a heavy police presence at the scene.

A Met Police officer at the scene told the Standard the item looked “legitimate” upon inspection but was deemed to be a false alarm.

The roads reopened and the incident was stood down at about 4.30pm.

Police later revealed the item causing all the fuss was an old battery.
