Huge tailbacks: The 25 on Saturday afternoon

Motorists are facing bank holiday travel chaos after a multi-vehicle crash on the M25 caused huge tailbacks.

Emergency services descended on the scene of the crash near Heathrow Airport causing delays of more than an hour.

The crash happened between junction 16 for Uxbridge and junction 17 for Marple Cross and Rickmansworth on the busy motorway.

All three lanes of the M25 clockwise were closed after the incident at about 1.30pm, bringing traffic to a standstill.

One person wrote on Twitter: "250 yards ahead of us, they've shut the M25. Major crash. Two fire vehicles and counting."

People were forced to get out of their cars to stay cool as temperatures in the capital soared.

Highways England tweeted: "All traffic is held on the M25 clockwise while fire work to extract a casualty from one of the vehicles.

"Traffic won't be released until this is done."

It is not known how many vehicles were involved in the crash or if anyone was injured.
