Summer's arrival was put on hold today as Londoners sought cover from the miserable return of rain, wind and a bracing fall in the mercury.

Pictures captured unfortunate commuters' efforts to battle strong winds and depressing showers, with temperatures in the capital dropping to around 10C.

The downpours come just days after a mini-heatwave saw the mercury top 23C, matching temperatures in Portugal.

Today, as Londoners sought shelter, holiday-makers in Lanzarote basked in record-breaking highs in excess of 42C.

The Met Office tweeted this afternoon: "Record May temperatures for Spain with 42.6C recorded at Lanzarote Airport."
